Springfield, PA (September 26, 2022) – An elderly couple was killed in a fatal car accident that took place at an intersection in Springfield on Friday afternoon, September 23.
According to Upper Bucks County officials, the accident happened around 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of PA-309 and Springfield Street. Police confirmed that two vehicles collided with each other at the intersection due to reasons that are not yet known. One of the vehicles ended up crashing into the front of a store, which was identified as Dreamstone Granite & Marble. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage in the accident.
Paramedics, fire crews, and several other responders were called to the scene to help those in need. A couple from Upper Saucon Township died in the accident. The driver of one of the vehicles, identified as 73-year-old Judith Rutherford, was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband, identified as 83-year-old Robert Rutherford, was seriously injured and hospitalized but tragically passed away at the hospital.
The roadway was blocked at the intersection for a period of time as police worked to clear the scene and debris.
No further details have been released at this time. The investigation into the circumstances of the collision continues.
