Upper Bern Township, PA (May 16, 2026) – A late-night crash on Interstate 78 in Berks County left one man dead after two tractor-trailers collided on Friday. Emergency units responded to the westbound lanes of I-78 between Exit 29 (PA 61) and Exit 23 (Shartlesville) at approximately 11:50 p.m. on May 15.

Authorities said a tractor-trailer struck the rear of another tractor-trailer that was stopped on the shoulder of the highway. The impact resulted in severe damage and a fatal outcome for one of the drivers involved.

Officials confirmed that a 61-year-old man from San Antonio, Texas, who was operating one of the tractor-trailers, died as a result of the crash.

The second tractor-trailer was parked on the shoulder at the time of the collision. Additional details regarding why the vehicle was stopped have not been released.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased driver.

Can Families Seek Compensation After a Fatal Truck Crash on an Interstate in Pennsylvania?

After a fatal tractor-trailer crash on an interstate in Pennsylvania, families may be able to seek compensation depending on the circumstances surrounding the collision. These cases involve examining whether negligence, roadway conditions, driver actions, or trucking procedures contributed to the crash.

Compensation may include financial losses such as medical expenses incurred before death, funeral and burial costs, loss of income or support, and other damages recognized under Pennsylvania law.

Truck accidents on interstate highways are frequently more complex than standard passenger vehicle crashes because commercial vehicles are subject to additional safety regulations and operating requirements. Investigators may review driver logs, vehicle maintenance records, electronic data, roadway conditions, and witness statements to better understand what happened.

In crashes involving a tractor-trailer stopped on the shoulder, officials often examine visibility, warning devices, lighting conditions, and whether drivers had enough time to react before impact.

Families coping with a fatal collision are often left managing several responsibilities at once while also waiting for answers from investigators and insurance companies. Commercial trucking policies can involve multiple parties and larger insurance coverage, which may make the claims process more detailed and time-consuming.

Keeping organized records, including official reports, medical documentation, repair information, and communication related to the crash, can help families better understand the process moving forward.

In many situations, families may also have questions about timelines, liability, and what legal options could apply under Pennsylvania law. Because interstate truck crashes often involve extensive investigations, updates may continue to emerge weeks or months after the collision occurred.

If your family is dealing with the aftermath of a serious or fatal crash, having reliable guidance can make a difficult situation easier to manage. A wrongful death lawyer can help explain insurance issues, review documentation, and discuss what options may be available while your family focuses on healing and handling day to day responsibilities.
