For unknown reasons, the driver of the pickup truck lost control of their vehicle due to wet road conditions. As a result, the vehicle traveled into oncoming traffic and collided with the Toyota.
Firefighters from the Summit Township Volunteer Fire Department, Vernon Central Volunteer Fire Department, and the Conneaut Lake Volunteer Fire Department all responded to assist.
The Toyota's driver, identified as Hugh, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Crawford County Coroner’s Office.
A 27-year-old man, a 23-year-old man, and a 73-year-old woman were all critically injured. The victims were transported to UPMC Hammett for emergency treatment.
The Pennsylvania State Police is currently investigating the incident.
We hope the three people injured due to this crash recover quickly.
Our sympathies are with the family of Elliott Hugh at this time.
Fatal collisions in the state of Pennsylvania claimed the lives of nearly 100 people every month. The unfortunate truth is that we see a significant number of accidents take place that are completely preventable. When drivers fail to operate their vehicles safely and responsibly, it can have deadly consequences for others around. This is especially true in inclement weather conditions.
When drivers are traveling on wet roadways, it is critically important that they are able to maintain control of their vehicles. Depending on the circumstances, drivers may be required to slow down and turn on their four ways while proceeding ahead. Unfortunately, there are far too many cases of drivers in a hurry to make it to their destination. As a result, innocent people continue to lose their lives as a result of these accidents.
