South Strabane, PA (November 28, 2025) – A deadly crash involving over a dozen vehicles occurred on November 27 on the flyover connecting Interstate 79 (I-79) northbound to Interstate 70 (I-70) westbound in Washington County.
Emergency calls began coming in shortly after 5:30 p.m. for a serious multivehicle collision, according to South Strabane Fire Chief Jordan Cramer. First responders arrived to find a “complex crash” scene involving 13 vehicles, including a semi-truck. A passenger vehicle was heavily damaged, with three individuals trapped inside.
Rescue crews worked to extricate the victims. Tragically, the front-seat passenger of the car died at the scene. The Washington County Coroner confirmed the fatality and stated the individual’s identity is being withheld until the family is notified. The vehicle’s driver and another passenger were rushed to local hospitals in critical condition.
Several others involved in the pileup were evaluated by medics at the scene but did not require hospitalization. Due to the scale of the crash, a mass casualty incident was declared, prompting the deployment of additional ambulances from neighboring counties.
Authorities say icy road conditions played a key role in the crash. The South Strabane Fire Department confirmed that the vehicle lost control due to ice on the flyover ramp. A snow band had moved into the area just before the crash, catching road crews in transit.
I-79 northbound between Exit 33 (US 40/Laboratory) and Exit 34 (I-70 East) remained closed until just after 10 a.m. Friday. The incident remains under investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police.
Our hearts go out to the family and friends mourning this tragic loss and to all those affected by the crash.
Crashes caused by icy road conditions are especially common in Pennsylvania during the winter months, particularly on highways like I-79 and I-70. Sudden snow bands, like the one that moved through South Strabane on Thursday, often create hazardous conditions faster than road crews can respond. Even experienced drivers can lose control when roads become slick, and multi-vehicle collisions are more likely on high-speed roadways and ramps.
In incidents involving winter weather, determining liability can be complex. While ice is a natural hazard, drivers are still expected to maintain safe speeds and leave extra space between vehicles. Failing to adjust to conditions can be considered negligence under Pennsylvania law. When serious injuries or fatalities occur, victims or their families may have the right to pursue compensation.
A knowledgeable wrongful death lawyer can help victims understand their options, gather evidence, and handle negotiations with insurance companies. In crashes involving multiple vehicles, legal support becomes even more critical, as determining fault can involve several parties, including commercial drivers, private motorists, and even government entities responsible for road maintenance.
Victims may be eligible for compensation covering medical bills, rehabilitation, lost wages, pain and suffering, and wrongful death damages in fatal cases. In this tragic South Strabane crash, families affected by the loss and survivors facing recovery have legal avenues to seek support and accountability.
If you or a loved one has been hurt in a serious weather-related accident, it's important to act quickly. Early legal intervention can preserve evidence and protect your rights.
