Pittsburgh, PA — Fatal Hit-and-Run Near Davis Ave in Brighton Heights

March 14, 2026

Pittsburgh, PA (March 14, 2026) — A tragic hit-and-run collision in the Brighton Heights neighborhood of Pittsburgh has claimed the life of a 58-year-old resident. Emergency responders were dispatched to the intersection of Davis and Massachusetts Avenues on Wednesday night, March 11, following reports of a man found unresponsive in the roadway.

Upon arrival, medics discovered Lawrence Soeder suffering from significant head trauma. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, where he was unfortunately pronounced deceased shortly thereafter.

Investigators from the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Collision Investigation Unit believe Mr. Soeder’s injuries are consistent with a vehicle impact and have confirmed that the driver failed to stop or render aid.

Authorities are currently searching for a dark-colored Kia Soul seen in the vicinity, and they are urging anyone with residential security footage or information regarding the vehicle’s owner to contact the bureau immediately.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Lawrence Soeder during this challenging time.

Pennsylvania Hit-and-Run and Criminal Liability

In Pennsylvania, leaving the scene of an accident involving death or serious bodily injury is a severe felony, governed by 75 Pa. C.S. § 3742. Unlike standard traffic violations, this statute imposes mandatory minimum sentencing for drivers who flee, reflecting the law's intent to punish not only the act of causing the crash but the egregious decision to abandon a victim in their final moments.

The Collision Investigation Unit (CIU) usually uses a "reconstruction-first" approach to build a criminal case. This involves analyzing forensic evidence such as paint transfer, headlight fragments, and skid marks to match them to a specific make and model.

While the criminal case focuses on the driver's punishment, a separate wrongful death and survival action can be pursued in civil court. This allows the estate of the victim to seek financial accountability for medical expenses, funeral costs, and the profound loss of companionship.

Because criminal trials can take years to resolve, victims' families often seek legal counsel early to initiate an independent investigation.

This ensures that civil evidence is preserved even if the driver is not immediately apprehended or if they lack sufficient insurance, as attorneys can investigate whether the vehicle itself was stolen or if there are other contributing factors like municipal road design issues.

An attorney can provide help and support for families during the aftermath of a fatal hit-and-run. Beyond supporting the criminal investigation, an attorney handles the complex logistics of the victim’s estate and coordinates with insurance providers, including navigating the nuances of Uninsured Motorist (UM) coverage if the driver remains unidentified.

By managing these legal and financial burdens, an attorney allows the family to focus on grieving while ensuring that no deadline is missed and that all avenues for justice are pursued.
