Mount Cobb, PA (March 18, 2025) – Seventeen people were injured after a charter bus carrying members of a bagpipe band crashed into a tractor-trailer in northeastern Pennsylvania on Sunday evening, March 16.

The crash happened just before 6:30 p.m. as the bus was exiting westbound Interstate 84 near Mount Cobb. According to Jefferson Township Volunteer Fire Department Chief Mike Shaffer, the bus collided with a parked tractor-trailer that had no one inside at the time.

Emergency crews responded to the scene and transported the injured passengers to area hospitals. Pennsylvania State Police confirmed that all 17 individuals suffered injuries. The Greater Scranton Black Diamonds Pipe Band was returning from a St. Patrick’s Day parade in Milford when the crash occurred. Band representatives stated they expect everyone to recover and have adjusted their performance schedule accordingly. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the crash.

We hope those injured in this accident make a timely recovery.

Bus Accidents in Pennsylvania

Bus accidents in Pennsylvania can lead to widespread injuries due to the number of passengers involved. Every year, crashes involving buses occur across the state, often resulting in hospitalizations and disruptions to traffic flow. While bus travel is generally safe, accidents can happen due to a variety of factors, including driver error, mechanical issues, or roadway conditions.

Understanding why these crashes occur can help raise awareness and improve road safety. Some common causes of bus accidents include:

  • Driver Fatigue – Bus drivers often work long hours, leading to exhaustion that can slow reaction times and impair judgment.
  • Mechanical Failures – Brake issues, engine problems, or other mechanical defects can lead to serious crashes if a bus is not properly maintained.
  • Inadequate Training – Bus drivers require specialized training to handle large vehicles safely. Lack of experience can contribute to accidents.
  • Poor Visibility – Large buses have significant blind spots, making it difficult to see other vehicles or obstacles in certain conditions.
  • Sudden Stops and Turns – Passengers inside buses are often unrestrained, meaning abrupt movements can lead to injuries, even if there is no collision.
