Lancaster County, PA (January 1, 2026)– A tragic crash in Lancaster County has claimed the life of a minor who was struck by a vehicle on New Year’s Eve, according to an update released by the Pennsylvania State Police. The fatal incident occurred at the intersection of Churchtown Road and Meadville Road, a rural crossroads that serves local traffic in the area.
State police said dispatchers received reports that a minor had been hit by a vehicle while riding a scooter. Preliminary information indicates the child was traveling on Churchtown Road in front of a van when the van struck him. The impact caused the minor to be thrown from the scooter and into the edge of the roadway, resulting in severe injuries.
Emergency responders were quickly dispatched to the scene. Due to the seriousness of the injuries, the child was rushed by emergency vehicle to Reading Hospital, where he was reported to be in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, Pennsylvania State Police later confirmed that the minor succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities have not released the child’s name or age, and no further details have been provided about the driver of the van or whether any charges are expected.
Pennsylvania State Police continue to investigate this crash.
We extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones during this devastating time.
Crashes involving children riding scooters, bicycles, or walking near roadways remain a serious safety concern across Pennsylvania, including in Lancaster County. While scooters are often viewed as recreational devices, they place children in proximity to traffic, where even a brief lapse in attention by a driver or rider can result in catastrophic consequences.
According to statewide traffic safety data, children are among the most vulnerable road users due to their smaller size, limited visibility to drivers, and developing ability to judge speed and distance. Rural and semi-rural roads, like Churchtown Road, can present additional risks because vehicles often travel at higher speeds and may not anticipate children sharing the roadway. The absence of sidewalks or designated pedestrian infrastructure further increases danger.
In winter months, safety risks are compounded by shorter daylight hours, colder temperatures, and reduced visibility. Drivers may have less time to react, and road surfaces may be affected by moisture or debris. For children riding scooters, protective equipment and adult supervision are critical, but these measures alone cannot eliminate the risks posed by fast-moving vehicles.
When a fatal crash involving a child occurs, investigators carefully examine all available evidence, including vehicle damage, skid marks, witness statements, and roadway design. These investigations aim to determine whether factors such as speed, distraction, visibility, or roadway conditions contributed to the tragedy.
Families who lose a child in a traffic crash face unimaginable emotional pain along with potential financial burdens related to medical care, funeral expenses, and long-term grief. Under Pennsylvania law, surviving family members may have legal options to pursue compensation when negligence or unsafe driving contributes to a fatal collision. While no legal action can undo such a loss, these claims may help families seek accountability and secure financial support during an incredibly difficult time.
