Carbon County, PA (January 2, 2026) – A man was killed early on January 1 after being hit by a vehicle on the Pennsylvania Turnpike's Northeast Extension.

The fatal crash happened along the northbound lanes of Interstate 476. Authorities say the pedestrian was struck near mile marker 76.2, about two miles north of the Lehighton interchange.

Emergency crews responded to the scene shortly after the incident. The Carbon County Coroner pronounced the man dead at the scene at 4:40 a.m. His identity has not yet been released, as officials are giving the family time to grieve.

State police from the Pocono barracks, along with the Carbon County Coroner’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office, are currently investigating the cause of the crash. An autopsy was scheduled for Friday to gather more information about the incident.

Our deepest sympathies go out to the victim’s loved ones during this challenging time.

Pedestrian Accidents in Carbon County

Pedestrian accidents on major highways like Interstate 476 in Pennsylvania are especially dangerous and often deadly. These roads are built for fast-moving vehicles and are not meant for people on foot. Unlike city streets, they lack sidewalks, crosswalks, and other safety features designed to protect pedestrians. When someone is on foot along a highway, drivers don’t expect it—and the chances of a serious or fatal crash increase greatly.

In recent years, Pennsylvania has seen a troubling rise in pedestrian fatalities. According to PennDOT, more than 150 pedestrians were killed in traffic incidents across the state in 2023. Many of these tragic accidents happened in low-light conditions, such as early morning or late at night.

Weather, poor visibility, and high speeds on highways like the Pennsylvania Turnpike also play a role in the severity of these collisions.

The aftermath of a fatal pedestrian crash is devastating for the victim’s family. Along with emotional grief, there can be heavy financial burdens related to funeral costs, medical bills, and lost income. In cases where someone else’s negligence caused the crash, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. This type of legal action allows families to seek compensation for both financial and emotional losses.

A skilled wrongful death lawyer can help families understand their rights and options. Attorneys experienced in these cases know how to investigate crashes, gather key evidence, and build strong claims. They often work with medical professionals and accident reconstruction experts to support their clients' cases.
