According to dispatch, the accident occurred on Vine Street, around 11:30 a.m., near Love’s Travel Stop and involved at least two vehicles. One of the vehicles reportedly struck a pole during the collision.

Emergency crews, including Pennsylvania State Police and the Londonderry Fire Company, responded to the scene and worked to assist those involved while rerouting traffic in the area.

Officials confirmed that two people were transported to a nearby hospital. Their conditions have not been publicly released.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

What Happens When a Vehicle Hits a Fixed Object After a Crash in Harrisburg?

When a vehicle strikes a fixed object, such as a utility pole or guardrail, after an initial collision in Pennsylvania, it adds layers of complexity to both the forensic investigation and the subsequent insurance claims process. These "secondary impact" crashes involve multiple points of force, which investigators must meticulously review to understand the exact physics of how the incident unfolded.

Unlike a standard two-vehicle accident, a fixed-object strike may indicate a total loss of directional control, raising questions about vehicle electronic stability systems or the specific angle of the primary impact.

Authorities typically examine factors such as vehicle speed, pre-impact braking, and specific driver actions leading up to the crash. They may also assess environmental variables, including road surface friction, visibility, and whether the initial collision caused a mechanical failure, such as a snapped tie rod or blown tire, that made hitting the object unavoidable.

In Pennsylvania, where inclement weather can play a role, determining if the road design itself contributed to the vehicle leaving the pavement is also a critical part of the discovery phase.

Injuries in these multi-stage collisions are often significantly more severe. A secondary impact with an unyielding object like a concrete pillar can bypass a vehicle’s primary "crumple zones," potentially leading to traumatic brain injuries (TBI), spinal trauma, or internal organ damage.

Because the body is subjected to two distinct jolts in rapid succession, medical evaluations and long-term diagnostic records play a vital role in documenting the cumulative physical effects.

Additionally, insurance claims may involve multiple drivers and even municipal entities, especially if a poorly placed fixed object or a lack of proper signage contributed to the severity of the crash. Determining how responsibility is shared between the initial at-fault driver and other contributing factors is a technical process.

When these types of accidents happen, insurers tend to spend time reviewing black box data, witness statements, and physical evidence to decide how to apportion liability.
