Allentown, PA (October 3, 2022) – A man was killed in a fatal pedestrian accident that took place on a roadway in Allentown on Sunday morning, October 2.
According to Lehigh County officials, the accident happened at 12:50 a.m. at South 24th Street. Police confirmed that a male pedestrian was walking in the area when he allegedly attempted to cross the street and was struck by a passenger vehicle due to unknown reasons. It is believed that the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene.
Paramedics, fire crews, and several other responders were immediately dispatched to the scene to help those in need. The pedestrian, who has since been identified as 63-year-old John Sassaman, was rushed to the hospital with multiple blunt force injuries. He was pronounced dead at the hospital several hours after the accident.
The roadway was blocked in the area of the accident for an extended period of time. Police worked to clear the scene as quickly as possible.
It is not known if anyone will face charges as a result of the accident. The investigation into the collision remains ongoing.
