Penn Township, PA (April 19, 2026) — A rear-end collision claimed the life of a young motorcyclist on Friday, April 17, in Berks County. According to the Pennsylvania State Police, the fatal accident occurred at approximately 6:37 p.m. on North Garfield Road.
The preliminary investigation reveals that a 24-year-old male was traveling westbound on his motorcycle when he was struck from behind by a vehicle driven by a 22-year-old male. The force of the initial impact caused both operators to lose control of their vehicles. The motorcyclist was thrown from his bike, coming to rest in the eastbound lane.
Emergency medical services treated the 24-year-old at the scene before rushing him to Reading Hospital, where he was tragically pronounced deceased. The driver of the striking vehicle sustained suspected minor injuries and was also transported to Reading Hospital for evaluation.
Troop L of the Pennsylvania State Police is currently leading the investigation into the crash.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the man who lost their life.
When a rider is struck from behind, the legal path forward in Pennsylvania is built on the presumption that the following driver is at fault for failing to maintain a safe distance. In high-impact cases like the one on North Garfield Road, an attorney uses "black box" data and accident reconstruction to prove the driver violated the Motor Vehicle Code by speeding or failing to react.
In the wake of a fatal crash, families can pursue a wrongful death action to recover funeral expenses, lost financial support, and compensation for the victim’s pain and suffering. While many PA drivers have "Limited Tort" insurance, these restrictions are almost always waived in cases of a fatality. This allows the family to seek a "Full Tort" settlement for non-economic damages, regardless of the specific policy choice.
If the State Police determine the driver was distracted or impaired, criminal charges may follow. While separate from a civil lawsuit, a conviction provides powerful evidence of "negligence per se," making it much easier to hold the driver financially accountable.
A personal injury attorney ensures that every medical record from the scene and from the hospital is preserved to document the full human cost of the collision.
