Washington County, PA (March 8, 2026) – Authorities are investigating a fatal incident after a person was struck and killed on Sunday, March 8, along Interstate 70.

According to Washington County Coroner Timothy Warco, a tractor-trailer driver called 911 around 4 a.m. after noticing what appeared to be a person lying on the eastbound lanes of I-70. The person was located roughly 200 feet from the Chesnut Street on-ramp in North Franklin Township.

Officials reported that the victim appeared to have been struck multiple times by passing vehicles. The person has not yet been identified, and no further details about the circumstances leading up to the incident have been released.

Pennsylvania State Police are continuing to investigate the fatal crash to determine how the person came to be on the roadway and what factors may have contributed to the incident.

Our deepest sympathies go out to the victim’s loved ones during this challenging time.

What Happens After a Fatal Pedestrian Crash on a Highway?

After a fatal pedestrian crash on a highway, investigators typically begin a detailed review of the incident to understand what events led to the collision. State police may examine the scene, review vehicle damage, analyze roadway evidence, and speak with drivers who may have been involved or witnessed the incident.

In cases where multiple vehicles may have struck the pedestrian, the investigation can take additional time as officials work to reconstruct the sequence of events.

Authorities may also review surveillance cameras, traffic cameras, or dashcam footage from nearby vehicles. These sources can help determine when the pedestrian entered the roadway and whether drivers had time to react. Investigators may also examine lighting conditions, weather, and roadway design to better understand the circumstances surrounding the crash.

During this time, officials often work to identify the victim and notify family members. Medical examiners and coroners typically conduct examinations to determine the exact cause of death and gather additional evidence that may assist in the investigation.

Families affected by fatal pedestrian accidents may later face questions about insurance, liability, and possible wrongful death claims. Speaking with a lawyer can help families understand how these claims work, what compensation may be available for funeral expenses or other losses, and what legal deadlines may apply.

While no legal process can undo the loss, understanding available options may help families navigate the difficult period following a tragic crash.

In addition, families may benefit from preserving any available evidence related to the incident, such as witness contact information, photographs, or reports from responding agencies. Early documentation can be important as investigations progress and insurance reviews begin.

Legal guidance may also help ensure that critical deadlines are not missed and that families receive clear information while the case develops.

At Edelstein Martin & Nelson, we assist families with understanding investigations, insurance communication, and potential legal options after fatal accidents across Pennsylvania.
