Philadelphia, PA — Motorcyclist Killed After Car Detaches from Tow Truck on Frankford Ave

Philadelphia, PA (March 1, 2026) — A tragic collision claimed the life of a 39-year-old motorcyclist on Saturday, February 28, in the Frankford neighborhood. Philadelphia Police were called to the 4000 block of Frankford Avenue at approximately 4:13 p.m. following reports of a head-on crash involving a loose vehicle.

According to investigators, a tow truck was traveling southbound when a silver 2005 Dodge Magnum it was hauling became detached. The unoccupied Dodge began rolling into the opposing northbound lane, where it struck an oncoming motorcycle head-on.

The motorcyclist, identified as Jason Harvey of Southampton, was thrown from his bike. He was rushed to a local hospital but was tragically pronounced dead.

The driver of the tow truck failed to stop and fled the scene immediately following the accident. However, detectives were able to use surveillance footage from nearby businesses to identify the towing company.

While representatives from the company later arrived at the scene to cooperate, the specific driver involved remains at large and is wanted by the Philadelphia Police Department for hit-and-run and other potential charges.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Jason Harvey during this challenging time.

What Should I Do After a Family Member Dies in an Accident in Philadelphia?

After a death caused by a vehicle detaching from a tow truck, and if the driver fled the scene, this might be both a criminal hit-and-run and a civil "Wrongful Death" case. A lawyer with experience in these types of cases can review your situation and explain the available paths for seeking justice.

The most urgent step in this case is identifying the driver and securing the Philadelphia Police Accident Report. Because this involved a hit-and-run, the report will include vital information from surveillance videos and the tow company's employment records.

Pennsylvania follows a "Choice No-Fault" system, but in the event of a fatality or a hit-and-run, these limits typically do not prevent a family from pursuing a full Wrongful Death claim. The victim's family may seek compensation for funeral expenses, medical costs incurred before his passing, and the loss of financial support

In cases involving "egregious" behavior, such as a driver fleeing a fatal scene or a company ignoring safety regulations, the family may also be eligible for Punitive Damages. These are intended to punish the wrongdoer and discourage other tow companies from cutting corners on safety.

Finally, it is important to review the victim’s own auto or motorcycle insurance for Uninsured Motorist (UM) coverage. In hit-and-run cases or situations where a commercial company may have insufficient insurance, your own UM policy acts as a vital safety net.

This coverage is designed specifically for scenarios where the at-fault party is unknown or lacks the proper insurance to cover the immense losses of a fatal accident.
