Philadelphia, PA (November 17, 2024) – A woman who was crossing the street with her husband was struck and killed by a suspected drunken driver in North Philadelphia, police said.
The deadly crash occurred on Lehigh and Germantown Avenues on November 16, around 3:15 a.m. A 58-year-old woman was crossing the street with her husband when she was hit by a car that was speeding westbound. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Responding police officers found the suspect vehicle about three blocks away on Park and Lehigh Avenues. The driver was taken into custody at Temple University Hospital; investigators believe she was intoxicated and driving without her lights on at the time of the crash.
Police have not yet revealed the identities of the victim or the suspect. In the meantime, the collision is under investigation. No further details were released during the interim, however.
We offer our sincere condolences to the deceased woman's family at this time.
All over the country, including in Pennsylvania, there is an increase in pedestrian accidents. The peak of distracted driving has resulted in a significant increase in the risk to pedestrians in recent years. Sadly, crashes claim thousands of lives each year and harm countless pedestrians.
Additionally, while there is always a chance of pedestrian accidents, some locations are riskier than others. Most of the more than 2,200 accidents in metropolitan statistical areas last year occurred in urban areas. In suburban regions, there were approximately 1,240 accidents, whereas in rural areas, there were only about 430. For example, when automobiles fail to stop pedestrians crossing busy metropolitan streets, they may hit pedestrians and inflict serious or even deadly injuries.
Pedestrian accidents can cause serious injuries or even death, leaving victims with lifelong pain and financial difficulties. It is up to the victims to cope with the agonizing consequences of an accident that happened without their fault.
