Philadelphia, PA (June 28, 2024) - A severe pedestrian crash has left a woman injured and her 4-year-old son in critical condition following an incident on Tuesday evening in Northeast Philadelphia. According to the Philadelphia Police Department (PPD), the 26-year-old woman and her child were crossing Bridge St at Summerdale Ave when they were struck by a 2002 Toyota Highlander. The automobile, making a left turn onto Bridge St, collided with the pedestrians. Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after 6 p.m.
Both victims were promptly transported to Albert Einstein Medical Center. Currently, the woman is reported to be in stable condition, while her son was subsequently transferred to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where he remains in critical condition.
The driver of the Toyota remained at the crash site, and as of Wednesday morning, no arrests have been made. Authorities are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Pedestrian accidents in Philadelphia have been a major concern in recent years, with a significant increase in the number of injuries and fatalities reported. According to data from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, there were a total of 1,077 pedestrian crashes in Philadelphia in 2019, resulting in 49 tragedies and 1,035 injuries. This marks a 12% increase in pedestrian accidents compared to the previous year.
Furthermore, a study conducted by the Philadelphia Office of Transportation, Infrastructure, and Sustainability found that most pedestrian accidents occur in high-traffic areas such as Center City and University City. The study also revealed that pedestrians aged 65 and older are at a higher risk of being involved in a traffic accident, with 42% of all pedestrian fatalities in Philadelphia involving seniors.
These statistics highlight the urgent need for increased safety measures and awareness campaigns to prevent pedestrian accidents in Philadelphia. Local authorities and advocacy groups are working to implement solutions such as improved crosswalks, better lighting, and public education programs to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities on the city's streets.
