Philadelphia, PA (December 18, 2025) – A fleeing suspect caused a deadly crash on December 15 after colliding with an Uber in Philadelphia, killing a passenger, police said. The incident began around 7:14 a.m. on the 900 block of North Watts Street while authorities attempted to serve an arrest warrant.

According to investigators, members of the Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office sought to arrest Joseph Cini, 35, on an alleged domestic assault warrant. Police said Cini fled the scene in a Nissan Maxima as officers approached. He then traveled eastbound on Girard Avenue from Watts Street at a high rate of speed.

As Cini attempted to escape, he crashed into an Uber vehicle, identified as a red Jeep Patriot, police said. The collision caused severe damage and immediately drew emergency responses. Officers and paramedics arrived within minutes and secured the area.

A 63-year-old woman riding as a passenger in an Uber suffered catastrophic injuries. Paramedics attempted lifesaving measures at the scene. However, officials pronounced her dead at 7:24 a.m. Police have not released her name pending family notification. The Uber driver, a 51-year-old man, sustained injuries during the crash. EMS transported him to Temple University Hospital for treatment. Hospital officials later listed him in stable condition.

Investigators documented vehicle damage, roadway evidence, and witness accounts. They also reviewed nearby surveillance footage and traffic cameras. Police continue to examine the sequence of events that led to the fatal crash.

We extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones during this devastating time.

Fatal Rideshare Crashes in Philadelphia

Rideshare crashes present growing safety concerns across Philadelphia. Services like Uber operate throughout the city at all hours. Passengers rely on these services for safe transportation. When fleeing suspects or reckless drivers enter busy corridors, the risk escalates sharply.

Girard Avenue carries steady traffic and frequent intersections. Morning hours add congestion from commuters and deliveries. When a fleeing vehicle enters such corridors, reaction time drops significantly. Collisions become more likely and more severe.

Rideshare vehicles face unique exposure. Drivers stop frequently for pickups and drop-offs. Passengers often lack control over route choices. When another driver crashes into a rideshare vehicle, occupants absorb the full impact.

High-speed impacts increase fatal injury risk. The force transfers directly to passengers, who have limited protection. Older adults face heightened vulnerability due to increased injury susceptibility. These crashes often result in catastrophic trauma.

Victims’ families face sudden grief and overwhelming uncertainty. Funeral costs and unexpected expenses arrive quickly. Loved ones also face emotional trauma and unanswered questions. A wrongful death claim may help families pursue accountability and financial support.

Injured survivors often endure prolonged recovery. Hospitalization, surgery, and rehabilitation can disrupt lives for months. Lost income and medical bills create financial strain. A personal injury claim can help address these burdens.

Liability in fleeing suspect crashes can involve multiple parties. Claims may include the at-fault driver and other responsible entities. Careful investigation determines fault and causation. Evidence such as police reports and video footage plays a critical role.

Insurance companies often contest high-stakes claims. They may dispute responsibility or minimize damages. These tactics can delay compensation for grieving families. Experienced legal representation helps protect rights and pursue fair outcomes.
