Philadelphia, PA – Update: Two Workers Found Dead After Parking Garage Collapse Near 30th St

Crews recovered the bodies of two workers who died after a parking garage collapse in the Grays Ferry area of Philadelphia. The recovery took place on Monday, April 13, near 30th Street and Grays Ferry Avenue after demolition crews cleared the unstable structure over the weekend.

Officials said the collapse first happened on Wednesday, April 8, when part of the structure gave way, killing three workers and injuring two others. Crews could not safely search the site at first due to the risk of further collapse. Teams began demolition on Saturday and brought down the final wall by Sunday evening to allow recovery efforts to continue.

Authorities later identified the two recovered workers as Mark Scott Jr. and Matthew Kane. Both were members of Ironworkers Local 401. Family members were present nearby as crews carried out the recovery process.

City leaders said the project had all required permits and inspections at the time of the collapse. Officials have not yet confirmed what caused the structure to fail. A construction company involved in the project stated it had no history of similar incidents and is working to gather more information.

The collapse also affected nearby businesses and residents. Officials closed surrounding roads and local stores, including a grocery store used by many in the area. 

The mayor ordered an independent investigation into the incident. The OSHA continues to investigate the cause of the collapse as reviews move forward.
