Fairview Township, PA (January 16, 2026) – A crash between a car and a horse-drawn buggy left ten people injured on January 14 in Mercer County, including a baby with serious injuries.
The accident happened around 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday along US Route 19 (US-19) near Fairview Road in Fairview Township. According to local sources, the baby was trapped under the buggy after the collision and was taken to a Pittsburgh-area hospital in critical condition.
Emergency crews transported all ten victims to four different hospitals. Details about the extent of injuries for the other victims have not been released.
The Pennsylvania State Police are handling the investigation. Route 19 was shut down for several hours but has since reopened.
Our hearts go out to the injured, especially the toddler, and we hope for a full recovery for everyone involved.
Horse-drawn buggies don’t offer much protection in a crash. They don’t have seat belts, airbags, or strong frames. When a vehicle hits one, it can break apart or flip, leaving passengers seriously hurt. In some cases, riders can be thrown from the buggy or pinned underneath it. Children, who often ride in buggies with their families, are especially vulnerable in these crashes.
Crashes involving horse-drawn buggies aren’t common in every part of the state, but in places such as Mercer County, they are a real concern. Roads such as US-19 are shared by drivers of all kinds: cars, trucks, and slow-moving buggies used by Amish and Mennonite communities. That mix creates risk, especially when drivers don’t slow down or fail to notice a buggy ahead.
Pennsylvania has laws in place to help protect buggy users, including rules about lighting, reflective materials, and slow-moving vehicle signs. Still, accidents happen, especially when drivers are distracted, speeding, or when it’s getting dark, and visibility is low.
When a buggy accident leads to injuries, families can deal with more than just getting better physically. Medical costs, missing work, and the need for long-term care are all issues that can cause stress. Sometimes families just need legal support to understand their options.
A personal injury lawyer can help by reviewing the facts of the crash, talking to witnesses, and handling communication with insurance companies. For families with injured children, legal action may help cover future medical needs.
