Cumberland County, PA (February 19, 2026) – A 15-year-old girl from Shippensburg died on February 15 following a crash involving a bicycle and a passenger vehicle in Southampton Township, according to authorities.

Troopers with the Pennsylvania State Police reported that the collision occurred at the intersection of Cleversburg Road and Baltimore Road. Emergency dispatchers received reports of the crash, and first responders arrived to find a teenage bicyclist and a damaged vehicle at the scene.

Investigators stated that the teen was riding her bicycle through the intersection when a car approached at the same time. The vehicle struck the bicyclist during the encounter. The impact threw the girl a considerable distance from the point of collision, which indicated the severity of the crash.

Emergency crews immediately assessed her condition and requested a medical helicopter. Responders transported her by life flight to a nearby hospital for advanced treatment. Despite extensive medical efforts, the girl later succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.

Authorities have not publicly released her name. Troopers did not report injuries to the driver of the vehicle involved in the collision.

The Pennsylvania State Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Investigators will review roadway conditions, vehicle positioning, and other physical evidence to determine the precise sequence of events. Officials have not announced whether any citations or charges will follow.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the young girl during this heartbreaking time.

What Factors Contribute to Serious Bicycle Crashes at Rural Intersections in Cumberland County?

Bicycle crashes at intersections often result in severe or fatal injuries because cyclists lack structural protection. Unlike vehicle occupants, bicyclists do not have seat belts, airbags, or reinforced frames to absorb crash forces. When a motor vehicle strikes a bicycle, the rider typically experiences direct impact and secondary contact with the roadway.

Rural intersections can present additional challenges. These areas may involve higher travel speeds, limited traffic controls, or sightline limitations caused by terrain or vegetation. Drivers and cyclists must monitor cross traffic carefully and make split-second decisions about timing and distance.

Investigators commonly evaluate several technical factors in these cases. They analyze skid marks, debris fields, vehicle damage, and bicycle impact points. Troopers may also review electronic data from the vehicle, measure sight distances, and collect witness statements. This evidence allows reconstruction specialists to determine how the collision unfolded and whether any contributing factors played a role.

Pennsylvania law requires motorists to exercise due care when approaching vulnerable road users, including bicyclists. At the same time, all roadway users must remain attentive and follow applicable traffic regulations. Determining responsibility in a fatal bicycle crash depends on a detailed review of the available evidence.

When a fatal incident occurs, surviving family members may have the right to pursue wrongful death and survival claims under Pennsylvania law. These claims can address medical expenses, funeral costs, and other financial losses related to the crash. Families must comply with strict statutory deadlines when pursuing legal action.

An experienced wrongful death attorney can review investigative findings, assess potential liability, and explain available legal options. Clear guidance helps families understand their rights during an emotionally difficult period.
