Caernarvon Township, PA (September 18, 2024) – A serious multi vehicle crash sent five people to the hospital late Saturday night in Lancaster County. Authorities say the crash was caused by an impaired driver who veered into oncoming traffic.
According to Pennsylvania State Police, the crash occurred just after 10 p.m. at the intersection of Twin County Road and Best Road in Caernarvon Township. A vehicle driven by an allegedly intoxicated driver crossed the center line and struck a truck and a sedan.
Inside the at fault vehicle was a 12 year old child who was also injured. Both the driver and the child were transported to the hospital for treatment. Their conditions have not been disclosed at this time.
Three additional individuals from the other two vehicles involved were also injured and taken to nearby hospitals. Emergency responders from Elverson Honey Brook EMS reported that at least two victims were trapped in their vehicles and had to be freed by rescue crews using specialized equipment.
The driver who caused the crash is expected to face charges, including driving under the influence. The investigation is still active as authorities work to gather all the details and evidence from the scene.
Drunk and impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of serious traffic collisions across Pennsylvania. Each year, families suffer life changing injuries and loss due to drivers who make the reckless decision to operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The recent crash in Caernarvon Township is a tragic reminder of just how quickly lives can be changed by one careless choice.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, alcohol-related crashes accounted for nearly 7,700 collisions in 2022 alone. These crashes often involve head-on impacts, high speeds, and multiple vehicles. Victims of DUI crashes frequently suffer from traumatic injuries such as broken bones, spinal cord damage, traumatic brain injuries, and more.
The physical, emotional, and financial toll of a DUI crash can be overwhelming. Victims may face long hospital stays, expensive rehabilitation, lost income, and ongoing psychological distress. In the case of child passengers, like the one involved in this recent crash, the effects can be even more devastating for the entire family.
