Greenwich Twp., PA – Three Injured in Semi-Truck Accident on I-78 Near MM 39.4

Greenwich Township, PA (April 3, 2026) – Three people suffered injuries on Thursday, April 2, in a semi-truck accident on Interstate 78 in Berks County. Emergency units responded shortly before 1:30 a.m. to the eastbound lanes near mile marker 39.4, between the Lenhartsville (Route 143) and Kutztown (Route 737) exits.

Pennsylvania State Police said the crash began when a 38-year-old man from New Oxford experienced a mechanical failure in a 2022 Freightliner Cascadia. He brought the truck to a stop in the center lane and activated hazard lights while attempting to restart the vehicle.

A 2026 Peterbilt tractor-trailer, driven by a 45-year-old man from Perth Amboy, New Jersey, then struck the stopped Freightliner from behind. The impact caused significant damage and trapped a 55-year-old Easton man.

Emergency responders worked to free the trapped passenger from the vehicle. Paramedics transported both the Freightliner driver and the passenger to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest for treatment. Officials have not released details about their conditions.

The Peterbilt driver also suffered minor injuries and received medical care at the same hospital. Investigators have not shared additional details about contributing factors at this time.
