Blair County, PA (March 28, 2026) – Authorities have identified the victim of a fatal wrong-way crash that occurred on Friday, March 27, on Interstate 99 north in Snyder Township.
According to Blair County Coroner Ray Benton, 50-year-old Jason Hoppel of Ebensburg died from blunt force injuries sustained in the crash. The collision happened around 5:48 a.m. when a 2015 Mercedes-Benz was reportedly traveling the wrong direction in the northbound lanes of I-99.
State police said the wrong-way vehicle collided head-on with Hoppel’s 2019 Mercedes-Benz. Hoppel was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the wrong-way vehicle has not yet been publicly identified and was transported to UPMC Altoona in critical condition.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including several volunteer fire departments, PennDOT, and the coroner’s office. The crash remains under investigation.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of Jason Hoppel during this challenging time.
Wrong-way crashes are considered among the most dangerous roadway accidents in Pennsylvania because they tend to involve high-speed, head-on collisions. When a vehicle enters a highway or ramp traveling in the wrong direction, other drivers usually have only seconds to react, significantly increasing the risk of severe or fatal injuries.
The danger largely comes from the combined force of impact. Because both vehicles are often moving at speed, the resulting collision can cause catastrophic trauma.
Victims may face life-threatening injuries requiring emergency treatment, hospitalization, and long-term care. Recovery can include multiple stages such as follow-up appointments, rehabilitation, and monitoring for delayed or worsening symptoms.
Investigations into wrong-way accidents typically examine how the driver entered the roadway and whether contributing factors were involved. These may include reduced visibility, driver impairment, fatigue, or roadway design issues.
Authorities review surveillance footage, witness statements, vehicle damage, and physical evidence like skid marks or debris patterns. In serious cases, this process can take time.
Insurance claims after a wrong-way crash can be complex. Determining liability is often a central issue, especially when one driver was traveling against traffic.
Several types of coverage may apply depending on the situation, including bodily injury liability, personal injury protection, and uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage.
Legal considerations may arise after serious or fatal crashes. In some cases, families may explore whether a wrongful death claim is appropriate, which can involve reviewing evidence, financial losses, and the circumstances surrounding the accident.
A lawyer can help review accident reports, insurance policies, and medical records to explain available options. They may also assist with documentation, communication with insurers, and general guidance through the process. This support can help individuals and families better understand their next steps after a wrong-way crash.
