Heidelberg Township, PA (August 10, 2025) – Authorities are investigating a serious pedestrian crash that occurred on August 8 in the 100 block of West Pennsylvania Avenue, leaving one person hospitalized with major injuries.

According to the South Heidelberg Police Department (SHPD), officers were dispatched at approximately 1:06 p.m. on August 8 after reports of a vehicle striking a pedestrian. Investigators say a westbound vehicle crossed into the eastbound lanes, mounted the sidewalk, and hit the individual.

First responders from Western Berks Fire/EMS and SHPD provided immediate medical aid at the scene. The victim was transported to a local hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. Police said the driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. The Pennsylvania State Police accident reconstruction team is assisting in determining the cause of the crash. Authorities are asking anyone with information or who witnessed the incident to contact Officer Cole.

Our thoughts are with the injured victim in hopes of their full recovery.

Pedestrian Accidents in Pennsylvania

Pedestrian accidents in Pennsylvania often stem from preventable causes such as distracted driving, speeding, running red lights or stop signs, failing to yield at crosswalks, and impaired driving. Dangerous conditions like poor lighting, reduced visibility, and slick or icy roads—especially common during Pennsylvania’s long winter months—can further increase the likelihood of a serious or even fatal collision.

Pedestrian accidents are among the most devastating types of collisions, and unfortunately, they occur far too often across the state. From busy intersections in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh to quiet neighborhood crosswalks, pedestrians face significant danger when drivers fail to follow traffic laws or remain alert behind the wheel.

Under Pennsylvania law, injured pedestrians have the right to seek compensation when a driver’s negligence causes harm. Potential damages may include medical expenses, lost wages, rehabilitation costs, and pain and suffering. In fatal cases, surviving family members may be able to file a wrongful death claim to recover funeral costs, lost income, and other related losses.

After a pedestrian accident, quick action is essential. Seek immediate medical care, even if you feel uninjured at first. Call the police to file an official accident report. If possible, gather witness contact information, take photos of the crash scene, and document any visible injuries. These steps can help preserve evidence and strengthen a legal claim.

Pennsylvania imposes a two-year statute of limitations for personal injury and wrongful death claims, making it important to begin the process as soon as possible. Whether the driver remained at the scene or fled, having skilled legal representation can significantly impact the outcome of your case.
