Silver Spring Twp., PA (May 22, 2025) — Emergency crews responded Wednesday morning to a serious crash involving a car and a garbage truck in Cumberland County. The collision occurred just after 8 a.m. at the intersection of Rich Valley Road and Beechcliff Drive, according to the New Kingstown Fire Company.
Officials say the car struck the rear of the garbage truck and became lodged underneath it, trapping the driver inside. Upon arrival, rescue teams found the vehicle severely pinned and immediately began extrication efforts.
Using specialized equipment, crews removed the car's driver-side doors and successfully freed the trapped individual within 11 minutes of reaching the scene. The driver was then transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The severity of their injuries has not been disclosed.
Rich Valley Road was temporarily shut down between Foxanna and Valley View drives while authorities cleared the scene and towed both vehicles. The roadway reopened around 10 a.m., fire police reported.
An investigation into the cause of the crash is currently underway by the Silver Spring Township Police Department. Our thoughts are with those affected by this accident.
Each year, Pennsylvania experiences a staggering number of traffic accidents, many of which involve severe injuries or tragic fatalities. With its extensive network of highways and interstates, the Commonwealth sees a high volume of truck traffic, a factor that significantly increases the risk of devastating collisions.
Large commercial trucks, due to their size and weight, can cause catastrophic damage when involved in crashes, particularly those that include multiple vehicles. Nationwide, a recent year saw over 166,000 truck accidents, with nearly 4,700 resulting in fatalities. While the highest numbers were recorded in states like Texas, Florida, and California, Pennsylvania was not far behind.
Pennsylvania ranked among the top five states for truck crashes, recording an estimated 10,000 to 12,000 such incidents in a single year. These collisions led to the deaths of roughly 250 to 300 individuals and left thousands more seriously injured. For those impacted, the aftermath can be overwhelming—emotionally, physically, and financially.
Pursuing compensation in the wake of a truck accident is rarely straightforward. Victims are often up against powerful trucking companies and their insurers, both of whom are focused on protecting their bottom lines, not on doing what’s right for the injured. Unlike ordinary auto accident claims, truck accident cases typically involve complex investigations, corporate defendants, and aggressive legal teams.
That’s why it’s crucial to work with experienced truck accident lawyers who know how to handle these challenging cases. If you or someone you love has been harmed in a truck crash in Pennsylvania, it’s important to act quickly to preserve evidence and protect your rights.
