The incident happened just before noon on Thursday along the 6800 block of Haverford Avenue in West Philadelphia. Investigators say the 50-year-old officer was investigating a separate vehicle when the hit-and-run driver struck him and took off.

The officer was taken to Roxborough Hospital in unknown condition but is expected to recover. The search for the driver who struck the officer continues, though anyone with information can call or text police. Updates on the incident are expected as the investigation continues.

Pedestrian Accidents in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania sees a significant number of pedestrian accidents each year. According to PennDOT, more than 4,000 pedestrian crashes are reported annually across the state, with many resulting in serious injuries or fatalities. Urban areas like Philadelphia often have higher rates of pedestrian-involved incidents due to heavier traffic and higher foot traffic.

Here are some common causes and consequences of pedestrian accidents:

  • Driver Negligence: Many crashes occur when drivers fail to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks or are distracted by devices. This negligence puts pedestrians at extreme risk.
  • Crosswalk Safety: Poorly marked crosswalks or intersections without pedestrian signals can contribute to accidents, especially in high-traffic areas.
  • Serious Injuries: Pedestrian accidents often result in severe injuries, including broken bones, head trauma, and internal damage, due to the lack of protection for those on foot.
  • Economic and Emotional Toll: Victims and their families may face mounting medical expenses, lost wages, and emotional trauma following an accident.
