Fairview Twp., PA – I-83 Backup Triggers Two Multi-Vehicle Crashes Near Exit 40

Fairview Township, PA (February 12, 2026) – A traffic backup on Interstate 83 led to two separate crashes involving a total of 10 vehicles on February 11 in York County. The Pennsylvania State Police responded to the incidents in the northbound lanes near Exit 40, Limekiln Road, around 9 a.m.

Troopers reported that congestion in the area caused vehicles to slow and stop along the highway. As drivers attempted to react to the sudden backlog, one vehicle rear-ended another, setting off a chain reaction involving seven vehicles. The force of the initial impact pushed several cars into one another, creating a pileup in the travel lanes.

Emergency responders arrived quickly to assess injuries and secure the scene. Troopers said one person sustained injuries in the first crash. Paramedics transported that individual to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment.

While crews managed the first collision, a second crash occurred within the traffic backup. According to police, a vehicle rear-ended another car and then collided with a tractor-trailer. This second incident involved three vehicles.

Debris and disabled cars blocked portions of the northbound lanes as first responders worked to clear the roadway. Tow trucks removed heavily damaged vehicles while troopers documented the scene and directed traffic.

The crashes caused traffic delays that stretched for several miles. Drivers faced extended backups until crews cleared the wreckage and reopened the affected lanes. Police continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding both incidents.

Our thoughts are with the injured individual as they recover.

How Do Highway Backups Lead to Chain-Reaction Crashes in York County?

Highway backups often create sudden speed changes that increase the risk of rear-end collisions. When traffic slows abruptly, drivers must react within seconds. If a driver follows too closely or fails to notice stopped vehicles ahead, a collision can occur quickly.

Rear-end crashes frequently trigger chain reactions on high-speed roadways like Interstate 83. The initial impact can push vehicles forward into others, especially when traffic sits tightly packed in multiple lanes. In heavy congestion, even a single moment of inattention can affect several vehicles at once.

Even crashes that result in minor injuries can disrupt traffic for hours. Emergency crews must evaluate occupants, remove damaged vehicles, and ensure roadway safety before reopening lanes. Meanwhile, drivers approaching the scene may encounter additional slowdowns, which can increase the risk of further collisions.

After a multi-vehicle crash, documentation becomes essential. Police reports, photographs, and medical evaluations help clarify what occurred and who sustained injuries. When multiple drivers and insurance policies are involved, clear records support efficient claims processing.

Pennsylvania law establishes specific deadlines for pursuing injury claims after motor vehicle accidents. Understanding these timelines allows injured individuals to make informed decisions without unnecessary pressure.

A car accident attorney can explain how liability determinations typically unfold in chain-reaction crashes. Legal guidance often includes reviewing police findings, vehicle damage, and medical documentation to assess available options.
