Manheim Twp, Pa. — One Injured in Multi-Vehicle Crash with Trash Truck on Valley Rd

Manheim Township, Pa. (May 5, 2026) — On Tuesday, May 4, a three-vehicle collision involving a trash truck left one person hospitalized. Emergency responders were dispatched to the intersection of Valley Road and Brookfield Road at approximately 3:46 p.m. following a report of an accident with entrapment.

Emergency crews arrived to find three vehicles tangled in the wreckage, including a trash truck. According to dispatchers, the force of the impact sent at least one vehicle into a utility pole.

Firefighters were required to perform an extrication to reach one of the occupants. That person was stabilized on-site before being transported to a local hospital for treatment. Their current condition and the extent of their injuries have not yet been released.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash.

Our thoughts remain with those affected as they continue to receive care and recover from their injuries.

Liability and Recovery After Commercial Truck Accidents in Pennsylvania

Liability in a collision involving a commercial vehicle in Pennsylvania requires analyzing electronic logging data, reviewing municipal or private maintenance logs, and investigating compliance with state weight and safety regulations. In Pennsylvania, accidents involving large trucks are subject to complex "modified comparative negligence" rules, making it essential to identify all contributing factors.

1. Determining Liability for Commercial Vehicle Accidents

In this case, if the trash truck involved was owned by a private waste management company or the municipality, the legal investigation will focus on whether the driver was properly trained or if the vehicle was adequately maintained. Under the doctrine of Respondeat Superior, an employer can be held liable for the negligent actions of their driver while on the clock.

2. Navigating Pennsylvania’s Full Tort vs. Limited Tort Options

In Pennsylvania, your ability to recover for pain and suffering often depends on the insurance option you selected:

  • Limited Tort: Restricts your recovery to medical bills and out-of-pocket costs unless the injury is "serious" (death, permanent disfigurement, or serious impairment).
  • Full Tort: Allows you to seek compensation for all damages, including emotional distress.
  • However, there are exceptions. If the at-fault driver was operating a commercial vehicle, victims may be able to bypass limited tort restrictions. A legal professional can help determine if the accident qualifies for full recovery.

3. Securing "Black Box" and GPS Telemetry Evidence

Large commercial trucks are often equipped with Event Data Recorders (EDRs) that capture vital data in the seconds before a crash. This data includes speed, braking patterns, and throttle position. Since this data is the only objective evidence available when a vehicle hits a pole or another car, a legal team will act quickly to send a spoliation letter to the truck owner, legally requiring them to preserve all electronic records before they are overwritten or erased.

4. Managing Subrogation and Medical Liens

If your health insurance or a program like Medicaid pays for your hospital care following a crash, they will likely place a "lien" on any future settlement you receive. This process, known as subrogation, means they want to be paid back from your final award.

An attorney helps negotiate these liens down, ensuring that the majority of the settlement stays in your pocket to cover your personal losses and long-term recovery needs.
