Coraopolis, PA (August 23, 2025) – A 70-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer on Thursday afternoon in Coraopolis, and officers identified the victim on Friday, August 22.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as John Joseph Volante, a resident of Moon Township. Authorities said the crash occurred shortly after 3:00 p.m. at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Main Street, when a tractor-trailer that had been stopped then accelerated under circumstances that are under police review.
According to Coraopolis Police Chief Jason Stewart, the driver struck the victim as the truck moved forward. However, it's unclear if citations or charges are pending, and no further details have been released. Authorities are asking anyone with information or who witnessed the incident to contact them.
We extend our deepest condolences to the deceased man's family members.
Deadly pedestrian accidents are tragically common across Pennsylvania, and many stem from preventable causes. Distracted driving, speeding, impaired driving, failure to yield at crosswalks, and drivers running red lights or stop signs all contribute to fatal collisions. Hazardous conditions such as poor lighting, reduced visibility, and icy winter roads only increase the risk of tragedy for pedestrians.
These crashes are among the most devastating types of accidents because pedestrians are completely unprotected against the force of a moving vehicle. From congested intersections in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh to residential streets and rural highways, pedestrians face the risk of life-threatening injuries or death when drivers fail to remain attentive and follow traffic laws.
Under Pennsylvania law, families who lose a loved one in a pedestrian accident may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Recoverable damages can include funeral and burial expenses, loss of companionship, loss of future income, and the emotional suffering caused by the sudden and preventable loss of a family member. Taking swift legal action can also help hold negligent drivers accountable and prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
If you have lost a loved one in a deadly pedestrian accident, it is critical to take immediate steps to protect your rights. Contacting the police, gathering evidence, and securing legal representation can make a significant difference in the outcome of your case. Because Pennsylvania imposes a two-year statute of limitations on wrongful death and personal injury claims, families should not delay in seeking justice.
