Shippensburg, PA – Michelle Garcia Killed in Pedestrian Accident on I-81
Shippensburg, PA (November 21, 2021) – At 8:35 p.m. on the night of Saturday, November 20, a pedestrian accident occurred on a major highway in Shippensburg.
According to Pennsylvania State Police, the accident happened in the southbound lanes of I-81. Police confirmed that a vehicle became disabled alongside the roadway, which was being operated by 23-year-old Michelle Garcia and 24-year-old Justice Danenberg from New York. The two immediately got out of their vehicle. At the same time, a woman identified as Juliana Barnhart was traveling in her vehicle and started to move over for the accident. In doing so, she struck the two pedestrians in the middle of the road near their vehicle.
Paramedics, fire crews, and numerous other responders were dispatched to the scene. Garcia was tragically pronounced dead at the scene due to traumatic injuries. Danenberg was hospitalized with unknown injuries.
Police confirmed that Barnhart remained at the scene after the accident. The roadway was blocked in several lanes for an extended period of time following the collision.
The investigation into the circumstances of the collision continues.
