Pittsburgh, PA (September 30, 2023) – A fiery truck crash took place near the Neville Island area on Thursday morning that claimed the lives of two victims.
Just after midnight on September 28, the Pennsylvania State Police responded to the scene of an accident that took place on Interstate 79.
Police reports show that a semi-truck tractor-trailer was traveling south along the intersection. For unknown reasons, the vehicle crossed over the center median and entered the northbound lanes. After entering the north side of the interstate, the vehicle crashed into another vehicle head-on. Both of the vehicles went off of the roadway and struck an embankment. Both of the vehicles then caught on fire.
The driver of the truck and the driver of the second vehicle both suffered fatal injuries. The two victims were pronounced deceased on-site after the Pennsylvania State Police troopers arrived.
It was discovered by the police that during the accident, a portion of the trailer from the semi-truck tractor-trailer struck a second vehicle that was also traveling northbound.
All of the passengers in the second vehicle were injured and transported to area hospitals.
At this time, the incident is being investigated.
We hope the injured victims recover quickly.
We offer our condolences to the families of the two people who died in this crash.
Fatal accidents across the state of Pennsylvania take the lives of more than 1,100 people every year. The unfortunate truth is that the vast majority of these accidents could be prevented. We continue to see innocent people die as a result of accidents caused by negligent and careless drivers.
When drivers are too tired to operate their vehicles but choose to do so anyway, they can cause severe accidents that ultimately take the lives of innocent people. Drivers who are too tired to operate their vehicles are likely to drift into other liens and crash into nearby vehicles.
We also see many accidents take place as a result of drivers who are speeding. Traveling too fast increases the risk of a driver losing control of their vehicle and crashing into another. Other leading factors in fatal accidents reported across our state include distractions, failing to yield, and switching lanes in a reckless manner.
