Jenkins Township, PA (December 12, 2022) – A woman was killed in a fatal car accident that took place at an intersection in Jenkins Township on Saturday afternoon, December 10.

According to Luzerne County officials, the accident happened around 1:10 p.m. in the afternoon at the intersection of South Township Boulevard and Chestnut Street. Police confirmed that an 88-year-old woman was pulling out at the intersection when her vehicle was suddenly struck by a second vehicle headed south, being operated by an 18-year-old. Both vehicles were badly damaged as a result of the collision.

Several responders, including paramedics and fire crews, were dispatched to the scene to help those in need. The woman in the first vehicle, identified as 88-year-old Ellen Petoniak, was rushed to the hospital with traumatic injuries. She was tragically pronounced dead while there.

The roadway was blocked at the intersection for a period of time following the accident. This led to delays until police cleared the scene.
