Girard, PA – Boy Killed in Fatal Semi-Truck Accident on I-90

Girard, PA (May 23, 2023) – Around 2:30 p.m. on the afternoon of Monday, May 22, a young boy was killed in a fatal semi-truck accident in Girard.

According to Erie County officials, the accident happened in a construction zone in the eastbound lanes of I-90 around exit 9. Police confirmed that traffic slowed in the area up the road due to construction, causing a chain-reaction collision between a semi-truck, a flatbed truck with a trailer, a van, and a passenger vehicle. The van flipped on its side due to the accident, and all of the other involved vehicles sustained extensive damage.

Paramedics, fire crews, and several other responders were dispatched to the scene to help those in need. A 12-year-old boy from Canada inside the van was tragically pronounced dead at the scene due to traumatic injuries. Four others inside the van sustained injuries and were hospitalized. One of those victims was rushed to the hospital by medical helicopter.

The roadway was blocked in all eastbound lanes of traffic from West Springfield to the Girard exit until police cleared the scene.

No further details have been released at this time. The investigation into the circumstances of the accident continues.
