Blair County, PA (July 6, 2024) – On Wednesday, July 3, a 25-year-old was rushed to UPMC Altoona after a collision on Interstate 99 that caused his motorcycle’s gas tank to explode, state police report.

The crash happened on I-99 in Freedom Township around 9:40 p.m., when the Harley-Davidson rider was headed north and collided with at least one other driver at the site. The motorcycle’s fuel tank punctured, spilling gas on the highway as it stopped in the right lane. Another vehicle headed north on I-99 also hit the motorcyclist, causing an explosion when the gas ignited. EMTs transported the motorcyclist to the hospital in critical condition. However, local law enforcement officials are still investigating the incident, and no additional details have been released.

Our thoughts are with the injured victim and his family members in hopes of his full recovery.

Motorcycle Accidents in Pennsylvania

Motorcycle accidents can be devastating. Here in Pennsylvania, these accidents cause hundreds of injuries every year. Some of the most common injuries that motorcyclists are left with following these devastating accidents include:

  • Spinal Cord Injuries
  • Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs)
  • Fractures and Broken Bones
  • Road Rash
  • Abrasions and Contusions
  • Soft Tissue Injuries
  • Internal Injuries
  • Amputations

It is still possible for motorcyclists to have serious injuries that will have a lasting impact on their lives, even if they are wearing helmets when they are involved in accidents. This is because they have very little protection during accidents, and their bodies are left entirely exposed to the hit. For this reason, they are unable to defend themselves.

After suffering an injury in a motorcycle accident, you can seek compensation for some of the damages you face. This is done by filing a personal injury lawsuit against the person responsible for the crash. Some of the damages that you may be able to recover include:

  • Property Damage: If your motorcycle was damaged in the accident, you can claim the cost of repairs or replacement.
  • Medical Expenses: You can seek compensation for all the medical bills from your motorcycle accident.
  • Lost Wages: If your injuries forced you to miss work, you can pursue compensation for your lost income during your recovery period.
  • Pain and Suffering: This type of damage accounts for the physical and emotional distress caused by the accident.
